The View was created from a love of drive-in movies, a passion for community, and one familiar thought:
“There’s nothing to do around here.”
What started as an idea became a mission to create something different in Morganton, a place where families, friends, couples, and neighbors can come together beneath the stars and make memories that last long after the credits roll.

The View is a drive-in movie experience in Morganton, North Carolina, created around something simple: bringing people together.

Movies may be what’s playing on the screen, but the experience is what matters most. It’s watching the sunset before the show. Sharing popcorn in the car. Laughing together. Looking up at the stars. Introducing your kids to a movie you grew up loving. Taking someone on a date that feels a little different.

The View is about the moments around the movie and the memories you take home with you.

Our mission is to create experiences that bring people closer together through movies, community, and unforgettable nights under the stars.
We want The View to be somewhere you can slow down, laugh, relax, get a little in your feelings, and simply enjoy being with the people around you.
Because sometimes the smallest moments become the ones you remember most.
This evolves the original mission, which described The View as creating “priceless memories” while fostering togetherness in a welcoming environment.

MEET OUR FOUNDER
The Kid on the Mountain

Long before there was The View, there was a shy, imaginative kid growing up in South Morganton on a mountain overlooking the town and surrounding area.
That kid was Rex Willis.
The land around him had been part of his family for generations. Morganton wasn't simply where Rex lived—it was home.

Some of his strongest childhood memories, though, happened away from that mountain.
His family would make trips to drive-in theaters in Shelby and Kings Mountain. There was the movie, of course, but Rex remembers something bigger: being together, sitting beneath the stars, and those quiet drives home afterward.

Those nights stuck with him.
So did another phrase he heard growing up:
“There’s nothing to do around here.”

At the time, those things had nothing to do with each other.
Years later, they would.

The Dream Changed. The Dreamer Didn’t.

For years, Rex thought his future would be soccer.
He began playing as a child and dreamed of becoming a professional player. That dream eventually disappeared, and accepting that wasn't easy.
But losing it taught him something he would need later:
Confidence couldn't depend on somebody else giving it to him.
Life eventually took Rex into the restaurant industry, where more than a decade of serving people taught him lessons no classroom could.
How to communicate. How to read a room. How to handle ten things happening at once. How to adapt when nothing goes according to plan.
And, most importantly, how much a great experience can matter to someone.

THREE THINGS CAME TOGETHER

Community. Drive-Ins. And “Nothing to Do.”

Eventually, three pieces of Rex's life started pointing in the same direction:
A passion for community.
Memories of childhood nights at the drive-in.
And the feeling that our area needed more things to experience together.

That became the beginning of The View.
Not another version of something that already existed.
Something different.
A place where every movie could create a different experience and where people could come back again and again to experience another story, another sunset and another night together.

Five Years in the Making.

The View didn’t happen overnight. For nearly five years, Rex researched the drive-in industry, visited theaters, built relationships, faced roadblocks, and kept pushing forward, even through the moments of “Can I really do this?”

The idea never disappeared, and neither did the work. Eventually, The View became more than a dream.

People could finally experience it.
